247's Philosophy on changing your behaviour around alcohol
The philosophy at 24/7 Help Yourself is that you are a rational, thinking human being. You may have a problem with alcohol but this problem does not define you as a human being, you are multi-faceted and capable of unique achievements in many areas of your life. The problem with alcohol can be overcome using some tried and tested solutions.
There are many sites making extraordinary claims to change your life “in just 10 minutes” ..”while you sleep” ..”by just taking this pill”. If you believe these adverts, maybe this is not the right site for you. We all want to take the easy route but deep down we all know change is not easy, it takes work and planning. If it was as easy as some of these adverts would have us believe, we would all have changed years ago, no one would drink too much, be obese or be in debt. Nevertheless change is not only possible, if we follow a relatively simple research based formula, it is guaranteed.
What this site will do:-
Empower you to take charge of your drinking and your life – this site puts you in charge of your own life by giving you the skills and confidence to change.
Give you a set of unique tools to build and monitor your motivation to change – motivation is the key to change, without it change will not happen.
Give you a set of unique tools that will help you decide how you need to change – not everyone needs to be abstinent and not everyone can control their drinking, but the decision about your goal and the plan on how to achieve it needs to be yours. So the solution and life plan is unique to you, made by you from information about you.
Provide step by step guidance how to use and interpret the results of the tools – there are text, audio and video instructions to guide you through using and making sense of the information that you enter.
Provide tools to monitor and evaluate your progress – feedback is important and it helps to motivate and sustain recovery.
Provide you with a personal page with your own control panel – from this page you have access to all your assessment and change tools, and the articles, audio’s and videos that you have chosen to save.
Provide you with your own personal Blog – this gives you a record of your journey to recovery including all assessment results and weekly evaluations.
Provide encouraging messages and feedback on a daily basis – messages and feedback will be delivered to your inbox.
Provide information on other aspects of living – information on topics such as self-esteem, anger, socialising without alcohol etc will be available in text, audio and video formats.
Provide you with a community of like minded individuals on the same journey – there is a forum, instant messaging and message boxes, so members can help each other. However, this feature is optional, so if you do not want to interact with the community you can have complete privacy.
Provide you with access to the experience of others – give you access to audio’s and transcripts of interviews with people in various stages of change and holding different views of change.
Give you access to information and advice 24 hours a day 7 days a week – unlike conventional therapy with scheduled appointments, you access the information and tools when you want to.
Provide complete confidentiality – all information is encrypted using the same algorithms used to make credit cards secure, so you can have confidence about confidentiality.
What this site will not do:-
Tell you that you are powerless – quite the reverse, the site is designed to help you find your own power.
Make you declare publicly that you are an alcoholic – if that is your wish and you f feel it helps then that is up to you but it is not a necessary part of recovery.
Offer a one-size-fits-all solution – this site recognises that not only are you an individual but that your individuality is crucial for your success in changing and maintaining that change.
Tell you that you need to be abstinent for the rest of your life – whatever relationship you have with alcohol is a choice you have to make. This site supports 3 outcomes abstinence, controlled drinking and reduced drinking.
Offer some magic bullet, or a CD to listen to while sleeping and wake up cured – these promises do not deliver, they are the modern equivalent of snake oil and magic potions. Changing an alcohol problem takes motivation, support and planning and this site will show you how to build motivation, plan your recovery and support of like-minded individuals.
Make the changes for you – no one can do that, it is up to you to put in the effort.
